Each skater is rallying up donations from her fans, friends, and family in exchange for the chance to take a cold dip in campus lake. Polar Plunge 2012 is a unique opportunity to support the nearly 21,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and more than 6,000 Young Athletes ages 2-7 participating in the Illinois Special Olympics. The Polar Plunge at SIUC this Saturday is one of twenty different locations where plungers will leap into Illinois lakes to raise funds for the Special Olympics. Donations will help provide athletes with intellectual disabilities the chance to participate in sports training and competitions.

The Southern Illinois Roller Girls will be participating in the plunge this year, joining more than 5,700 people statewide who will be voluntarily jumping into freezing cold water in the middle of winter as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges for Special Olympics Illinois. Each plunger has to raise at least $75 before they can take their dip. Support our team by helping each member reach their goal. As an additional treat for helping SIRG reach first place standing in total funds raised by our team of Shivering Skaters, for every $10 raised between now and the plunge, Eartha Kick, Dread Pirate Robyn, and Lethal Objection will do a suicide lap on skates (which involves sprints, falls, and quickly changing directions). Donate until they hurt! In lieu of suicide laps, our non-skating official, Off Constantly, has agreed to take a pie to the face for each $25 increment donated over $1,100 in order to help our team become the top fundraising team for the campus lake plunge.

Join us as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge 2012! Support your local roller derby league by donating online, and then come show your support next Saturday, February 25th at 12:00 PM as we take our plunge in campus lake.

Photo by Jeffrey Bazzell. At the July 23rd home bout, SIRG celebrated three people who are moving on from Southern Illinois:

Arcane Sugar landed herself a job in Effingham, IL, earlier this year and has been commuting to practices and bouts since then. The miles finally caught up, and she decided to say her formal goodbye to SIRG. Once work slows down, she plans on joining the closer Twin City Derby Girls (Champaign-Urbana, IL) or maybe creating a new league in Effingham.

J.K. Brawling will soon hold a master’s degree from SIUC and is leaving SIRG to search for work in Chicago, IL, or Nashville, TN. She said she will keep on playing roller derby wherever she goes and that she “won’t take a job where she can’t play.” Brawling plans on coming back and announcing SIRG home bouts as much as possible.

Layne Pipe, one of SIRG’s most valuable non-skating officials, is also a soon to be graduate of SIUC and is moving to Texas for a postdoctoral research position at the University of Texas at Austin. Once settled in, she plans on strapping on some wheels and skating with the recreational league of the Texas Rollergirls. Texas better look out for Swanomatopoeia!

SIRG wishes these three women the best of luck and will miss them all very much!

This month is jam-packed (har har) with bouts which will test the endurance, fortitude, and teamwork of the SIRG A-team. These girls are really going to have to push their limits and skate cohesively in order to come out successfully at any one of these bouts.

No matter the outcome, each of these bouts is sure to be full of action, fast skating, and lots of entertainment for the viewing audience!

SIRG vs. Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (ROSI) @ Evansville, IN

On July 9th SIRG will be heading east to play ROSI who are currently ranked 20th in the North Central region according to the WFTDA Rankings. This will be the first time these two teams have played each other.

ROSI is coming into this bout off two straight wins (versus the Peoria PUSH Derby Dames and the Quad Skate Terrors), and SIRG hopes to overcome that momentum by focusing on teamwork and lots of practice.

SIRG is fielding a roster filled with familiar A-team names along with some newer additions to the A-team who are more than ready to prove themselves.

For more information about this bout and to purchase tickets, visit the ROSI website.

SIRG vs. Arch Rival Roller Girls (ARRG) Saint Lunachix @ Ballwin, MO

SIRG vs ARRG Oct 2010. Photo courtesy of Mr. McWheelyJuly 16th SIRG heads in to Missouri to play against the Saint Lunachix, ARRG’s developmental travel team.

Last October SIRG suffered a big loss against this team, but everyone certainly learned a lot from that bout.

“I was totally amazed by how quickly they could skate and keep such a tight wall,” said SIRG co-president Krush Groove. “Their recycling was pretty awesome as well.”

SIRG vs ARRG October 2010. Photo courtesy of Mr. McWheely

This bout will be a good indicator of how much SIRG has progressed since last season.

After the SIRG vs. St. Lunachix bout, the excitement continues as the ARRG Allstars, currently ranked 10th in the North Central region, play Grand Raggidy from Grand Rapids, Michigan, ranked 14th.

If you can make it out to the St. Louis area, this double header is sure to be amazing. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the ARRG website.

SIRG vs. Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls (LBD) @ Marion, ILSIRG vs LBD June 2011. Photo courtesy of Chops.

This month’s bouts end with SIRG hosting LBD for a rematch at home on the 23rd. A SIRG B-team scrimmage will provide the pre-bout entertainment.

SIRG recently beat LBD 121-100 in a closely contested bout when they traveled to Lafayette, IN, on June 11th.

“SIRG played very well,” said one of SIRG's newest A-teamers, Tall Drink of Slaughter. “We had our heads on straight and played as a team/family should play. If we play like that again we will continue to win.”

Last month, SIRG focused on a 4 jammer rotation, while LBD tested the SIRG defensive waters, jamming with 8 of their 14 skaters.

Watch out for LBD’s Kitty Crossbones and Psycho Socializer, who together scored 66 points at that bout, while SIRG’s Jack E RIPher proved how much of a threat she is on the jammer line. RIPher was lead jammer in 8 of her 9 jams and her blockers made the most of that status by only allowing 2 LBD points to RIPher's 52 points.

LBD’s blocker Dreaded Thunder was also mentioned by several SIRG skaters as someone to pay close attention to. As a blocker, she will do her best to keep you down. As a jammer, she will not let you get in her way.

This is sure to be a competitive bout, so mark your calendars now. You can buy tickets for our upcoming bout, Smack to the Future Part 2, on Brown Paper Tickets now. Tickets can also be purchased at the following locations:

Oh where, oh where did my roller girl go?

Congratulations to SIRG co-president Dread Pirate Robyn! She recently found out that she is pregnant, and everyone here is very excited to eventually meet the mini DPR and get our momma back on 8 wheels!

One of SIRG’s skaters is nursing an injury and will be off skates until fully recovered:

Eveready, a formidable A-teamer, was injured while playing Demolition City Roller Derby’s Destruction Dames from Evansville, IN, on May 21st. She recently had surgery and said her first physical therapy appointment went well. Eveready hopes to be skating again in approximately 4 months.

SIRG would like to say farewell and offer best wishes to a few ladies who have left the hot and humid land of Southern Illinois and SIRG:

Hard hitter Mypsfit moved to Effingham recently and says she cannot wait to play again.

Original Cyn has moved back home to Lafayette, Louisiana, where she’s currently skating with the transfer freshmeat class for the Acadiana Roller Girls.

Zooey SlayChanel, one of SIRG’s newest players, has also moved home to Peoria. She plans to continue skating, possibly joining the Peoria PUSH Derby Dames.

Everyone at SIRG wishes these ladies the best and will miss them very much.
